What is La Niña?

La Niña is the cool phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Sea-surface temperatures in the central tropical Pacific drop well below average, shifting rainfall and pressure patterns across the globe.

  • Declared when Pacific ocean temperatures fall 0.8°C or more below the long-term average for a sustained period.
  • Strengthened by stronger-than-average trade winds that push warm water towards Asia.
  • Typically lasts 9–12 months but can sometimes extend for two years.
  • Named by Peruvian fishermen who observed the cool water arrival around Christmas.

How does La Niña affect Australia?

For Australia, La Niña usually means above-average rainfall across eastern and northern regions, with cooler daytime temperatures and an increased risk of flooding and tropical cyclones.

  • Eastern states: higher chance of widespread rain, storms and river flooding.
  • Northern Australia: earlier monsoon onset and more tropical cyclone activity.
  • Southeast: cooler maximums but warmer overnight minima due to cloud cover.
  • Western Australia: less consistent; southwest may be slightly drier during some events.

How is La Niña different from El Niño?

La Niña cools the Pacific and brings wetter weather to eastern Australia, while El Niño warms the ocean and typically causes drought. They are opposite phases of the same climate cycle (ENSO).

Does La Niña guarantee flooding?

No, but it significantly raises the risk. Above-average rain increases the chance of riverine and flash flooding. Actual impacts depend on local conditions such as soil moisture and the strength of the event.
