Doomadgee experiences a hot, semi-arid climate with a distinct wet season from November to March; the live forecast above shows today’s conditions in this remote Gulf of Carpentaria community.
What is the typical weather pattern for Doomadgee?
Doomadgee sits in northwestern Queensland’s savanna country, where the year splits sharply between a sweltering wet and a mild dry season.
- Wet season (November–March): Daytime highs often reach the high 30s °C, with intense humidity and monsoon bursts that can trigger local flooding, including Doomadgee flood events along the Nicholson River.
- Dry season (April–October): Clear skies, lower humidity and cooler nights; July minimums can drop to around 10 °C.
- Annual rainfall averages about 700 mm, with most falling between December and February.
How does the weather here compare with nearby towns?
Doomadgee’s inland position means it runs a few degrees hotter than coastal Burketown weather, but it is slightly less humid than far-north Cairns weather during the wet season.
- Mount Isa weather, roughly 300 km south, is drier and sees bigger day-to-night temperature swings.
- Burketown weather, closer to the Gulf, receives slightly more rain and is prone to storm surges.
Does Doomadgee have a weather radar?
The BoM’s Doomadgee weather radar site covers the local area but has gaps to the east; for broader tracking, the Mount Isa radar is also useful during wet-season storms.
When is the best time to visit Doomadgee?
The dry season (May–September) offers the most comfortable conditions: warm days around 28 °C, low humidity and minimal rain. Avoid the wet season unless you are prepared for extreme heat and potential flooding.
Does Doomadgee flood often?
Yes. Heavy wet-season rain can cause the Nicholson River to rise rapidly, cutting access roads. Check the Doomadgee flood gauge on the BoM site and monitor severe weather warnings before travelling.
